GoGirlsMusic.com is the oldest and largest online community of indie women musicians. Our mission is to promote, support and empower indie women in music.
We are a unique organization that focuses on advancing the careers of independent female artists. Founded in 1996, the organization works tirelessly to help artists through education, networking, and events worldwide. Artists who become involved have the opportunity to perform, have their work reviewed, and get involved with a hardworking group of women who “get things done” in the music scene.
Madalyn Sklar started the organization in 1996 with a vision of bringing together independent women musicians from around the world. 18 years later, GoGirlsMusic.com has become a welcome destination for women in music through networking and events. Madalyn is also a music business coach & consultant, blogger, podcaster and social media strategist. She has spent over 18 years working with a wide range of independent musicians, helping them get focused and energized. Her goal is to help indie artists achieve greater success in the music business by “working smarter not harder.”
GoGirlsMusic is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and fearless leader Madalyn Sklar is ready to shake things up a bit. She has appointed two new Co-Executive Directors, Delia Stanley and Rorie Kelly, to help her lead GoGirls into the next 20 years and beyond.
Stanley and Kelly are both indie artists who have been raising their own voices in the online music community for the past several years. They created and popularized the hashtag #CommunityNotCompetition and both advocate strongly for artist empowerment, and female artist empowerment in particular.
Stanley, a visual artist as well as a writer and musician, made a name for herself in the social media world as an editor and blogger for Current.com. She has honed her community building skills with projects like The Indie Tree, an online hub for New York area musicians, and The Indie Hour, her weekly show on Pawling Public radio highlighting the arts and local happenings. She brings with her years of experience as an executive assistant for a non-profit organization. “We are looking forward to creating more opportunities and spaces for our members to have their music and stories heard,” Stanley comments.
Kelly, who just released an album about being your own hero called Rising Rising Rising, believes she can build a successful music career around community and women’s empowerment. She blogs weekly for GoGirlsMusic and has also had her writing featured on GuitarWorld’s Acoustic Nation, Bandsintown Artists’ Blog, and Cyber PR’s blog. “We don’t believe that indie artists are at the mercy of the music industry,” Kelly explains. “We believe that we are the industry, and we help create it every day.”
Sklar is excited to pass the torch to both Stanley and Kelly. While she will forever be the GoGirls “fearless leader,” she will be able to focus attention on her expanding career as a Social Media Influencer. “I have always had a very DIY mindset with GoGirlsMusic and my other projects,” says Sklar. “I am ready now to open up leadership and let these two very active community members take the reins.”
