My name is Sarah, and I am 37 years old. Today, I am going to tell you about myself and why I created this blog about US female indie music. Keep reading the paragraphs below as I unravel the story behind who I am, my artistic passion, and what I want to achieve here.
Early Life and Family
Originally from the state of Illinois, I moved through the greater part of the country throughout my entire childhood. My dad was in the army – hence we were always on the go – and my mom was a music schoolteacher.
Since we had to change states quite a lot because of my father’s assignments, my mother, Margaret, found it difficult to keep a job. However, she kept finding ways to sustain her love for music and passion for teaching. She always engaged with local communities, where she would show both children and adults the vast and amazing universe of music.
My mom felt particularly strongly about indie music. Once in Atlanta, Georgia, she started her own band called Honeycomb. She teamed up with fellow indie music lovers, and they had quite a few successful gigs.
Being an army man, my dad was often absent from the house, so my mom became my main source of inspiration. I was lucky enough to have inherited her talent for music, so she engaged me in most of her music projects from an early age. The Honeycomb indie music band was one of them.
I was the Honeycomb’s PR and did a lot of publicity for the group. That is how I connected with a lot of professional musicians and music industry reps. Soon enough, I created a rich network of music professionals, who served as my main source of inspiration and ideas.
An Artistic Inspiration of My Own
However, as time went by, I started leaning more toward my creative side. I really wanted to make music, and my natural inclination was to turn to indie music. With my mother’s help, I went on to create a female indie music band, which we called The Hummingbirds.
To be honest, my performing career was not as successful as I would have imagined. The reasons were quite a few and ranged from creative differences with band members to the need to work multiple other jobs to support myself.
However, what I discovered throughout this process was the need to educate the audiences and support female indie bands on their way to artistic expression. What is characteristic of indie musicians is that they stray from the big labels. This means they get little exposure and publicity. Female indie artists are in even greater need to be supported on their way to success, as they often have to juggle between different roles.
How This Blog Was Born
With all of that in mind, I started searching for practical ways to support the development of the female indie music environment in the US. I used a lot of my knowledge and contacts from my time as both a publicity professional and a musician to create a comprehensive approach in this regard. The latter includes practical support and fieldwork as well as wider publicity efforts, of which this blog is a part.
Through this web page, I aim to introduce you, my readers, to the vast and vibrant world of female indie music. I hope you enjoy exploring artists, genres, and sub-genres, as they are incredibly diverse and enticing. I am thrilled to share my passion with you, and I hope you will enjoy our time together.
Cheers, Sarah
